April snow showers. . . bring May flowers?

The only good news about today’s Minneapolis-St. Paul snowfall is that the colder temperatures thus far in April, will prolong the crabgrass control season. Green Stuff Outdoor Services has applied our first of two early pre-emergent herbicide applications to many of our customer’s lawns. Crabgrass seeds in your soil will start to germinate when the soil temeratures are 60 degrees for at least one week. Green Stuff Outdoor Services still has plenty of time to apply our double barrier crabgrass herbicide applications to your lawn.

Green Stuff is finishing our last few mowings and fall cleanups. This will wrap up our 34th year servicing the Twin cities area. We’d like to thank all our customers, website visitors and friends that made this a sucessful season in a very tough business environment.

Our customer support and patronage allowed Green Stuff to employ over 100 technicians and laborers this season. Green Stuff Outdoor Services pumped back into the economy well over 3/4 of a million dollars in equipment purchases, wages and supplies. Thank you for allowing us to serve you and help in a small way to rebuild our local economy. We hope to serve you again next season.

Hot Plus Humid Equals FUNGUS

Minneapolis and St. Paul area lawns are typically subjected to hot and humid weather during July and August. Our staff has seen fungus diseases like Red Thread, Leaf Spot and Summer Patch appearing in lawns. Maintain balanced fertility
Reduce thatch
Increase mowing height to 3 inches

WATER…WATER…WATER!

Several Twin Citie’s lawns are suffering from Environmental Damage due to the early, dry Spring. Brown to yellow spots and areas up to 15 feet in diameter have appeared in lawns the last two weeks. University of Minnesota horticulturists and pathologists, as well as our Green Stuff Outdoor Service’s staff, are noting an increase in reported cases of Environmental Damage. Lack of moisture in the soil results in poor root growth. Stressed root growth causes green grass blades to yellow. Environmental damage occurs in the hottest and driest areas first. Areas in direct sunlight, sidewalk, driveways and south and west facing slopes are most susceptible. However, all areas of the lawn are susceptible, depending on soil substructure and watering habits.

Green Stuff recommends you water at least an 1 1/2 inch of water weekly. Soil should be moist to a depth of 6 inches. Increased irrigation amounts are needed if extended periods of dry weather are forcasted. Our Green Stuff lawn care program and good watering practices will keep your lawn healthy all season.

Crabgrass and Lilacs

During our 33 years in business, Green Stuff Outdoor Services has heard it countless times. Radio personalities and television talking heads have read the same old tired prepared script. They robotically repeat “get your lawn crabgrass control applied when the lilacs bloom!” While the Farmer’s Almanac is full of fun folklore and interesting nature observations, the lilac/crabgrass adage doesn’t hold true.

Breakthrough new pre-emergent herbicides for crabgrass control have been developed in the past few years (media outlets must not have read the memo). Green Stuff Outdoor Services uses Prodiamine herbicide for crabgrass control. Our crabgrass treatment stops crabgrass germination for four months from the date of application. Our Green Stuff applications made in April are effective all the way through July. This is well past the average May 30th crabgrass germination date in our Twin Cities northern climate.

Soil temperature dictates when crabgrass seeds germinate, not lilac bushes. Soil temperatures along southern exposures, boulevards and hard “heat sink” surfaces in a lawn will germinate earlier than say, the northern exposure of a Minneapolis/St. Paul yard. Crabgrass can germinate and be uncontrollable long before a purple or white flower appears on a lilac bush in these areas. Green Stuff Outdoor Services’ advise our customers, the earlier the better for crabgrass control with Prodiamine.

EMERALD ASH BORER ALERT

Emerald Ash Borer was discovered in St. Paul in mid May of last year. Green Stuff Outdoor Services knew it was just a matter of time before this destructive pest would be introduced to the Twin Cities area. An immediate quarantine was enacted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture for Hennepin and Ramsey Counties. Unconfirmed sightings of the Emerald Ash Borer have been made as far west as the Minnetonka and Wayzata suburbs of Minneapolis.
